One often hears the people of Japan saying that among flowers, their favorite is the plum. In the hilly southern region of Joyo City one can find the Aodani Bairin; it is a name which has been known since old times and a place which is often visited by plum-watchers.

No, I didn't go on the Shinkansen because it's too fast to see what actually lies outside the train. I went on three really splendid train rides with those rather old cute looking rattlers – in Gumna, Kamakura and Kyoto. Instead of seeing the landscape rushing by, or me rushing through the landscape, these trains go nice and slowly – this is the best to discover the beauty of Japan whilst on the move.

As an European, my standard Christmas consists of a huge dinner with family, a Santa Claus visit and a bunch of presents. But in Japan things work differently. This Christmas was a special one for me, even by the Japanese standards – my friends and I went to a secret onsen in the mountains and sat there looking at the snow slowly falling from the sky. Perfection.

On the northern coast of the most South island of Japan is the city of Beppu. It is known as the place to go if you want to have some relaxing time in an onsen, a hot spring bath. The city has onsens in 8 different areas, all with different kind of hot spring water. Here and there one can see random steam coming out of ransom places in the pavement. But most astonishing are the 8 Hells that you can visit, without even going underground.
